Al-Ahsa, one of Saudi Arabia’s most culturally rich and historically significant regions, has seen an extraordinary 500% increase in tourism, welcoming over 3.2 million visitors in 2024 compared to 2019. This remarkable growth, announced by Tourism Minister Ahmed Al-Khateeb at the Al-Ahsa Forum 2025, underscores the region’s transformation into a must-visit destination. Tourist spending has also skyrocketed, surpassing SR3.3 billion ($897 million) last year—a 400% jump since 2019.

A Thriving Tourism Sector
This surge in visitors aligns with the Ministry of Tourism’s efforts to attract investment, improve infrastructure, and develop local talent. The hospitality industry has been a major beneficiary, with a 52% increase in licensed tourism facilities since 2023 and hotel room availability reaching 2,700 by the end of 2024.
Backed by the Tourism Development Fund, several high-profile projects have come to life, including luxury hotels like Hilton Al-Ahsa, Radisson Blu, and Hilton Garden Inn. These investments, totaling SR3 billion, have significantly enhanced Al-Ahsa’s accommodation offerings, making it more appealing to both domestic and international tourists.
Investing in Local Talent and Infrastructure
Developing the local workforce has been a priority, with over 5,300 training opportunities provided since 2023—exceeding 50% of the ministry’s initial target. The government’s commitment to nurturing national talent ensures that Al-Ahsa’s tourism sector continues to grow sustainably.
Additionally, Saudi Arabia has allocated more than SR3.5 billion for 17 major tourism projects in the region. These initiatives aim to enhance infrastructure, add over 1,800 hotel rooms, and leverage Al-Ahsa’s rich cultural and natural attractions to further boost its tourism appeal.
Al-Ahsa: A Strategic and Cultural Hub
Al-Ahsa’s growing popularity can be attributed to its strategic location, deep cultural roots, and rapid urban development. Situated near other Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, the region boasts strong connectivity through air, rail, and road networks. It is also home to the UNESCO-recognized Al-Ahsa Oasis, one of the largest natural oases in the world, making it a magnet for heritage enthusiasts.
Recent expansions at Al-Ahsa International Airport have further strengthened the region’s accessibility, doubling its capacity to accommodate one million passengers annually. With two international halls and ten gates, the airport is now well-equipped to support the influx of tourists.
Al-Ahsa Forum 2025: Driving Economic Growth
Since its inception in 2003, the biennial Al-Ahsa Forum—organized by the Al-Ahsa Chamber in partnership with ARAMCO—has served as a platform for discussing investment opportunities and economic challenges. The 2025 edition focused on aligning with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, positioning Al-Ahsa as a key investment and tourism hub.
A Bright Future for Al-Ahsa Al-Ahsa’s tourism success story is a testament to strategic planning, robust investments, and a strong focus on local talent development. As it continues to grow, the region is solidifying its place as one of Saudi Arabia’s premier travel and investment destinations—blending rich history with modern infrastructure to create an unforgettable experience for visitors.
