The new generation of Formula E cars challenges modern Formula 1
The debate between electric and thermal, which dominates the automotive landscape, translates into the showdown between F1 and Formula E in motorsport. But not only that. The World Rallycross Championship is attempting to solve the dilemma with a simple yet effective approach. In the 2024 motorsport season, electric and thermal cars will compete together in the same championship.
Gen4 Cars: How Formula E Wants to Surpass Formula 1
Formula E, whose tenth season will kick off in Mexico next weekend, is watching. The championship reserved for electric single-seaters has one goal: to challenge Formula 1. While F1’s performance has so far been unmatched, the fourth generation of electric propulsion cars seems ready to make a giant leap.
The debut is scheduled for 2027, and Maserati, the only Italian manufacturer in the championship, is convinced: “It will be the biggest step forward ever.”
There are rumors of longer-lasting batteries and 600kw of power (almost double the current gen3’s 350kw). These are significant numbers, enough to make organizers consider abandoning some of the current circuits because they are too narrow.
Maserati: “For F1, It Will Be Game Over”
“Currently, we can build electric motors more powerful than those in F1,” explain the Maserati team – “Their only advantage is due to downforce and the fact that our tires are still partially road tires. When we use soft compounds, lap times will be the same, if not better.”
The challenge is thrown. The evolution of electric aims to put an end to the thermal engine, even in motorsport. And Maserati is certain: “With gen4, it will be game over for Formula 1.”
